Upcoming Activities:

Your Phase 2 Team has been hard at work to develop some activities we hope you’ll look forward to– please let Tiwana know if you’re interested:

  • Sunday, March 26
    • 3-5 p.m. We’ve reserved the back room at Potwin Pottery to paint spring themed items. Potwin Pottery has just moved–we will now meet at their new location in Fairlawn Plaza Mall (21st & Fairlawn). After that we’ll proceed to El Mezcal in the Fairlawn Plaza parking lot for dinner at 5 p.m. So we can plan for enough tables, please email Tiwana or sign up on the Phase 2 Board in the Celebration Room. The details for the Potwin Pottery event are:
      • If we have more than eight people, the studio fee will be $6 per person.
      • You’ll choose your item to paint. The cost for these range from $5-$75. We have photos of some of the pieces for you to see. Please let us know if you’re interested so you can choose your item in advance.
      • Once the pieces are painted, PP will fire them and have them available for pick-up in a week
  • Saturday, April 1
    • 9 a.m.-Noon Church grounds clean-up. By April 1, it will be time to lend a hand to make our grounds attractive–light lunch to follow!
  • Monday, April 10
    • 5:30 p.m. Gather in the Celebration Room for a conversation about Medicare. As we either approach or are in the midst of Medicare Services, we may have questions. Susan Harris from Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging will share Medicare Basics and an overview of the services that JAAA provides. For those interested we will grab dinner afterwards at a nearby eatery.
  • Sunday, April 23
    • Quarterly Movie Night–Details to follow.

Watch for details on these events:

  • Informational meeting on Medicare by Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Organizations such as FUMC’s First Responders are always looking for help, and Phase 2 folks can provide time and talent in a variety of ways. Simply contact the church office to add your name to the list of First Responders, and each month you’ll receive a list of the specific mission-based work requested in our community. Based on your abilities and availability, you’ll sign up and help.

What is Phase 2?

Phase 2 is not chronological – it’s a state of mind. And it’s not limited to FUMC members! So if our activities are attractive to you, please join us and let us know if you’d like to join our team. We’ll welcome your ideas.

Phase 2 provides programs and activities for those of us transitioning from careers and raising kids to the “next phase” of our lives.

How it began:

  • It grew from a group of First Church members-Boomers themselves- who recognized our generation’s intention to “redefine retirement.” Phase 2 will focus on our priorities of:
    • Doing something “worthwhile”
    • Utilizing our experience and expertise effectively
    • Offering flexibility in our commitments
    • Building and nurturing relationships and friendships.

What we do:

  • In polling an initial group of Boomers, we learned their primary interests were: Card/Game groups, Spiritual/Bible studies, Exercise/Health issues, Community Volunteer opportunities, Book Clubs, Travel/Mission trips. Some of these programs already exist, and others will emerge as champions emerge to spearhead a new project. We’re excited to utilize the special talents of our members!
  • We also schedule purely fun activities, like dinners and concerts. We’ll also set aside a time each month to just meet for coffee and conversation.

Our Vision:

  • While Phase 2 was the result of some discussions by a group of FUMC members, we believe it can be a  resource  for all Boomers in the Topeka area—not just FUMC members.  Our vision is to be the “go to” resource for Boomers as they explore how to invest their time and energy in this next phase.  Most people limit their retirement planning to the financial side and we want to provide relevant programs and activities to make this next phase a truly satisfying and rewarding one.
